How to Stop the Battery of a New Laptop Deteriorating

The bad news to get out of the way from the very beginning is the unalterable fact that all batteries will begin deteriorating once the use of a new laptop begins.  Battery deterioration does not mean the end of the world for that new laptop.  There are several things that you can do to lessen the deterioration of the battery in a new laptop.

Some of the first and quick things that you can do to help increase the life of your laptop battery are: setting the screen brightness lower, reducing the backlighting of the laptop and turning off the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not necessary to be in use.

While working or your laptop, it will help if you close any programs that you are not using or needing to work within a short period of time.  Large numbers of open programs put a strain on the laptop battery.

You also need to remove disc drives, thumb drives and any other external device that you do not need for your current work.  All these items will make your laptop battery drain much faster and work harder.

Another good tip is to not allow the battery to get too hot.  Heat causes batteries to drain and deteriorate much faster than normal.  If you feel the battery getting too hot, then turn the laptop off for a while and let the battery recover.

Updating the programs running on your laptop to the most current versions will aid in not making your battery work any harder than it needs to while accomplishing your tasks.  Current and updated programs require less energy as they operate.

Finally, it is a very good practice to not allow your battery to fall below 20% battery charge.  Most manufacturing information today advocates for staying above this level of charge.  Falling below the minimum charge level repeatedly will reduce the battery life significantly.
